I didn’t actually start training as a bodybuilder! I started at the gym when I was about 17 for very different reasons…swimming! Having been a County Champion and swam on the national stage, the gym helped me gain more stamina, strength and endurance. Butterfly stroke was my favourite. Shoulder, chest and upper body exercises, were crucial if I was to succeed.  Then, if I’m honest, in my early 20’s, I trained just because like looking good, I had the foundations of a very solid swimming history and being blessed with a fast metabolism, that meant I could eat almost anything I like, train minimally and maintain a good physique.

Then at the beginning of 2008, Chris and Jason began training for their first bodybuilding Competitions, which seemed like a lot of hard work to me, but for them it really paid off. The banter in the gym continued, with people asking when it was my turn. In august of this year I thought ‘what the hell’ and began the training for it. I set my own goals and just had to work towards them.

This is the only way to achieve fitness, in my opinion. You have to weigh up the pros and cons and if the pros outweigh the cons you just have to go for it. After a few months of hard work it had paid off. I was in competition shape and never looked better, going on to win the NAC British championships ‘1st timer’ class and receiving an invite to the European universe competition held in Germany at the end of November 2008. I now have a reason to train regularly and will hopefully go on to bigger things. No matter how high the bar you set for yourself, if  you work hard enough, anything can be achieved.
